U.S. Ambassador Andrew Puzder Visits the College of Europe for a Discussion on the Future of Transatlantic Relations

On 9 October 2026, the Master of Arts in Transatlantic Affairs (MATA) programme at the College of Europe welcomed Ambassador Andrew PUZDER, U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, for a wide-ranging discussion on the future of U.S.-EU relations. The event brought together students from the MATA programme, participants in the European Union Diplomatic Academy (EUDA) and European Union Diplomatic Programme for the Enlargement Region (EUDP), as well as members of the wider College community.

Hosted by Professor Michele CHANG, Director of the MATA programme, the session featured a welcome by Rector João CRAVINHO and opening remarks by Ambassador Puzder before moving to an extended question-and-answer discussion. The interactive format provided students with an opportunity to engage directly with a senior U.S. diplomat on many of the most pressing issues shaping the transatlantic agenda.

The conversation covered a broad range of topics, including transatlantic trade relations, industrial policy, critical minerals supply chains, European capital market integration, energy security, digital policy, and the regulation of artificial intelligence. Students also explored questions relating to the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), developments in the Arctic region, NATO cooperation, and evolving relations with China.

Reflecting on the foundations of the transatlantic partnership, Ambassador Puzder underscored the depth and resilience of the U.S.-European relationship. In discussing the historical bonds that continue to shape cooperation today, he recalled the sacrifices made by the United States during the Second World War and emphasised the enduring strategic importance of close transatlantic ties.

The exchange highlighted both areas of cooperation and points of policy debate between the United States and Europe. Participants discussed the opportunities and challenges arising from Europe's digital regulatory framework, differing approaches to emerging technologies, and the need to strengthen economic competitiveness while maintaining open and secure markets.

The event formed part of MATA's ongoing efforts to connect students with senior policymakers and practitioners from both sides of the Atlantic. By bringing together future diplomats, policymakers, and experts for direct engagement with current decision-makers, the programme seeks to deepen understanding of the complex issues shaping transatlantic relations in an increasingly contested geopolitical environment.

Following the discussion, Ambassador Puzder met with College leadership before participating in a student podcast session, continuing the dialogue with students on the future of U.S.-EU cooperation.
