Why study transatlantic affairs?
Today’s major policy challenges cross the Atlantic.
Security, trade, technology, energy, climate and democratic resilience cannot be understood from only one national or regional perspective. MATA prepares you to analyse these challenges from both sides of the Atlantic and to work across institutions, sectors and cultures.

Your MATA journey
Year 1
Begin at the College of Europe or The Fletcher School and complete your foundational coursework.
Year 2: partner semester
Cross the Atlantic and study at the partner institution.
Year 2: professional semester
Complete a three- to four-month internship with a transatlantic focus and finalize your thesis.
Alternatively, MATA students can do a semester of coursework in lieu of the internship.

From a MATA internship to transatlantic policy work in Washington
Antonia completed her MATA internship at the German Marshall Fund in Washington, DC, where she now works. Her experience shows how the programme’s professional semester can connect academic interests with an early career in the transatlantic policy community.
‘The MATA programme has given me the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with a host of exceptional scholars, practitioners, colleagues, and friends on both sides of the Atlantic. Over the past two years, I have studied policy challenges at the forefront of transatlantic relations today, including national and economic security, regulatory dialogue, and digital transformation. The programme consistently challenged me to broaden my perspective and expand my horizons.’
