The simulation game immerses students in the dynamics of EU accession negotiations through a real case engaging scenario. Participants actively take on roles to negotiate credible outcomes, gaining first-hand experience of how bilateral and multilateral negotiations unfold within EU institutions and between the EU and an accession country under the Revised Enlargement Methodology.
This intensive 4-5 day exercise is set against the backdrop of current, ongoing accession negotiations, focusing on one or more specific Clusters or Chapters under discussion between the EU and enlargement-country actors. Participants assume the roles of key stakeholders, including representatives from the European Commission (notably DG ENEST and the relevant DG for the policy area), the Council of the EU (COELA and COREPER II), EU Member States, negotiators from enlargement countries, journalists, and representatives from stakeholders.
Through this immersive experience, students not only master the negotiation process but also gain insights into formal and informal procedures and the impact of factors such as time pressure, communication skills, emotions, and personality on the outcome of high-stakes discussions.
