The College of Europe in Natolin was pleased to host a lecture titled: "Building Public Trust: Independence and Transparency in EU Financial Oversight" by Mr Tony MURPHY, President of the European Court of Auditors, within the framework of the Natolin Professional Development and Careers Sessions.
This lecture was a gateway for students to gain first-hand information about the European Court of Auditors (ECA) and directly connect with essential aspects of their professional development and career potential within the EU institutions. The ECA may be a lesser-known institution, but with an important role in the EU architecture. It aims to be at the forefront of the public audit profession, and to contribute to a more resilient and sustainable EU that upholds the values on which it is based.
The ECA President outlined how the ECA work enhances the trust of the citizens and helps to respond effectively to current and future challenges facing the EU. President Tony MURPHY introduced the tasks and work of the ECA, discussed the most important publications and their main messages. He also presented job and internship opportunities at the EU institutions.

About the speaker:
Mr Tony MURPHY was elected the 12th President of the European Court of Auditors (ECA) on 1 October 2022. In 2018 he took over his position as the Irish Member at the ECA. He supervised the financial audits, and, in his capacity as ECA Member for the annual report, he was responsible for the annual report on the EU budget, a key product of the ECA. He was also in charge of compliance and performance audits on topics including child poverty, and regularity of spending under EU cohesion policy.
Previously, Mr MURPHY was the Director of Chamber IV (Regulation of Markets and Competitive Economy) and Head of Cabinet of a Member of the ECA. From 2007 to 2012, Mr MURPHY was Head of the Internal Audit Unit at the European Commission´s Directorate‑General for Economic and Financial Affairs, DG ECFIN, which was his first function at a European Institution. He started his professional career in the late 1970s as an auditor at the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General in Dublin.
