In the framework of the Natolin Neighbourhood Days, on 2 October 2024 the European Neighbourhood Policy Chair at the College of Europe in Natolin hosted a Fireside Chat with the Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine H.E. Katarína MATHERNOVÁ on "The EU and Its Role in the Neighbourhood – A Case Study of Ukraine". She discussed the European Union's political, economic, and security influence in the neighbourhood, particularly in Ukraine, focusing on its involvement in reform processes, conflict resolution, and integration efforts.
Before being accredited as the Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine in September 2023, Ms Katarína MATHERNOVÁ served as Deputy Director-General of DG NEAR (Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations) from 2015 to 2023. She also held the position of Deputy Director-General in DG Regional Policy, where she was in charge of Cohesion Policy Coordination between 2007 and 2010. Moreover, Amb. MATHERNOVÁ has held senior management and advisory roles at the European Commission, the World Bank (2002–2004 and 2010–2014), and in the reform government of Slovakia (1998–2002), where she served as Chief Institutional and Policy Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and was a key architect of Slovakia’s economic transformation.
