Can the EU Afford to Be "Post-Modern" in a Multipolar World?

Madariaga Report - 1 July 2010

There is a growing perception that the EU is becoming weaker in its relationship vis-à-vis big continental states such as the US, China and Russia. What currency does the EU’s soft and normative power hold in a world of states that straightforwardly pursue their national interests? To what degree will the EU’s own strategic “self-perception” have to change in such a world? With the continued dominance of the “Big Three” in EU foreign policy (France, Germany and the UK), the pervasive rule of unanimity and a lack of unified European defence, is the EU well-placed to maintain its position as a “post-modern” bloc?

A Citizen's Controversy with Nicole Gnesotto, Professor at the Conservatoire national des Arts et Métiers, and Robert Cooper, Director General for External and Politico-Military Affairs at the Council of the European Union.

La Turquie dans l'Europe: dans l'intérêt de qui?

Madariaga Report - 10 June 2010

Is it in the EU's interest to enlarge to Turkey and is it in Turkey's interest to integrate within the EU? Would a 'privileged partnership' be a good compromise? Would it be deemed acceptable by Turkey, who obtained the status of candidate country in December 1999, fourty years after it first expressed its wish to be considered for membership? Can the EU enlarge to a country as important as Turkey without endangering its political cohesion at a fragile moment in its integration process?

This Citizen's Controversy with Elie Barnavi, historian, Scientific Director of the Museum of Europe, former Israeli Ambassador to France, and Hélène Flautre, MEP (Greens / EFA), Chair of the Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, was held on 10 June 2010 at the Economic and Social Council, Brussels.
