Madariaga Report - 16 October, 2008
The second workshop of the programme “Conflict Prevention in Practice” focused on the link between conflict prevention and the fight against illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons (SALW). The large number of small arms in circulation and their availability represents a big spoiler for peace and security, acting as a destabilizing factor and thus increasing the risk of conflicts. The event was held on 16 October 2008 in the premises of the French Permanent Representation and it was organized jointly by MCF and the Folke Bernadotte Academy, in cooperation with the French Presidency and with the support of the General Secretariat of the Council, the European Commission and the European Peacebuilding Liaison Office (EPLO).
On 17 October 2008 a dialogue forum gathered representatives of international and regional organizations, NGOs and other key players as well as representatives of EU Member States to tackle the implications of the illicit trafficking of SALW for the stability of the African continent. The forum explored in parallel the issue of the funding and the implementation of SALW – related activities in Africa and the role of the EU. |
