In an increasingly interdependent world, innovative approaches must be developed to respond to a new and expanding array of security challenges. Climate change, the management of natural resources, international organised crime, poverty and hunger, are amongst the issues at the core of the global security agenda. Preventive strategies are needed to stop the destabilizing potential of these problems escalating into full-blown violence.

The European Union has put conflict prevention at the heart of its Security Strategy, basing its approach on the principles of comprehensiveness and effective multilateralism.

The Foundation, by means of conferences, seminars and publications, engages the full spectrum of relevant actors to strengthen European conflict prevention capacities and to promote the role of the EU as a leading global actor.

Strengthening Capacities

Wire FenceThe Conflict Prevention in Practice programme seeks to further enhance the conflict prevention capacity of the EU through improved internal coordination and greater cooperation with external actors. Developed with the Folke Bernadotte Academy and in close collaboration with the European Institutions and EU presidencies, this programme consists of a series of workshops aimed at the creation of an informal network of experts in conflict prevention.

The European Programme for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities seeks to strengthen the European capacity to effectively contribute to the global efforts to prevent genocide, engaging EU Member States and Institutions in a common approach.

Enhancing Knowledge

The European Journal of Conflict Prevention, to be launched in 2009, will serve as the leading reference point for academic and practitioner-led research on conflict prevention policy and practice.
