| Cross Border Cooperation in the Barents Region |

Aims The Madariaga European Foundation and the Norwegian Barents Secretariat have established a permanent cooperation to explore the possibility of joint projects in Northwest Russia. The geographical focus includes the Murmansk and Arkhangelsk Oblasts, the Nenets Autonomus Okrug, the Republic of Karelia and the Republic of Komi. Main developments Within the framework of this cooperation, the Madariaga European Foundation ant the Barents secretariat will, on the one hand, explore joint funding opportunities of projects in the region, and on the other hand work together in order to establish the Barents Institute in order to strengthen research on vital development issues in this region. The partnership agreement was signed in Brussels in 28th April 2005. The Barents Institute has been formally established in Kirkenes, on 1st of February 2006, and focuses its work on resource management, regional development and conflict Prevention issues in the Norden area including the Northwest Russia. The Madariaga European Foundation is member of the Board.
