Preventing Conflict

In an increasingly interdependent world, innovative approaches must be developed to respond to a new and expanding array of security challenges. Climate change, the management of natural resources, international organised crime, poverty and hunger, are amongst the issues at the core of the global security agenda. Preventive strategies are needed to stop the destabilizing potential of these problems escalatingWire Fence into full-blown violence.

The European Union has put conflict prevention at the heart of its Security Strategy, basing its approach on the principles of comprehensiveness and effective multilateralism.

The 'Preventing Conflict' programme aims to promote the strengthening of Europe's political tools and by boosting the EU's institutional and policy responses to conflict. Novel strategies are needed more than ever to improve Europe's conflict prevention capabilities and effectiveness.

In tandem with our partners the Foundation combines research, action and advocacy to engage the full spectrum of actors committed to boosting Europe's conflict prevention capacities and promoting the role of the EU as a leading global actor.
