The G20 and the EU: What Room for Manoeuvre for a Divided EU?

12:30 - Wednesday, 23 September 2009

Finance poses two fundamental challenges to the EU. Firstly, should the EU's objective be to put an hypertrophied and predatory financial sector back on track, or should the EU strive to scale down the financial sector in line with the needs of the real economy? Secondly, should European regulation align itself to the G20's minimalist consensus, or is the EU in a position to venture a more ambitious regulation in-keeping with its social model?

To answer these questions, Nicolas Véron, Research Fellow at Bruegel, and Andrew Watt, Senior Researcher at the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), were invited to give out their views at a Citizen's Controversy held on Wednesday 23 September 2009.
