What does this election tell us about the state of democracy in Europe? In the context of an economic crisis, after a campaign that largely ignored the role of the EU, voter turnout has predictably reached a new historical low. Centre-right parties have been confirmed in power and came out as the main victors, while the Left finds itself in shatters, and eurosceptic and anti-EU parties, although fragmented, are on the rise. What is this likely to imply for the next legislature and, more generally, for the EU at a time of critical challenges? During this bilingual Citizen's Controversy, two eminent journalists, David Rennie, EU correspondent for The Economist, and Jean Quatremer, EU correspondent for Libération, shared their analysis and assessment. |
