23:00 - Wednesday, 25 April 2007

Dr. Ioannis Samouilidis, DG Energy and Transport, European Commission

The Conference "Energy and Conflict: Current Controversies" at the French Petroleum Institute (IFP), 26 April in Paris, gathered over sixty energy experts from businesses, European Institutions, embassies, international organisations and NGOs. Panellists included experts such as Stein Tonnesson, Director of the Peace Research Institute in Oslo, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iranian Ambassador to the IAEA, and Leonid Grigoriev, President of the Institute for Energy and Finance.

The event was openend with a forewarning on current confrontations over nuclear energy policies. Also, as competition over scarce energy  resources is growing, the risk of current tensions spilling over into conflicts is elevated.
